The Next New Thing

The next new media I can think of is a personalized mailbox assistant. This idea is inspired by a movie, called 'Her'. Basically, this personalized mailbox assistant can be connected to any of your smart devices, and this assistant will have a personalized voice based on your preference, either to be a 'female' voice or a 'male' voice. Their tone will be just like a normal person talking to you and will adjust accordingly to your mood. This mailbox assistant can read your emails, news, and anything. It will shorten the time in which you need to browse your mailbox, the computer intelligent system can identify which email is most important to you.

Wiki So Far

I've been editing our class wikis couple times throughout this semester. Because I'm not good at fixing syntax error or grammar, so that I decided to upload more photos to reference the text. The first edit I've made is in "New Media in Music". In this page, there are a lot of descriptions of musical instrument, however, without the pictures, it's hard to realize what instrumentals are they talking about, so that I uploaded 3 pictures referencing to the instruments which I founded in Google.

Recently, I add some contents in the "Food, Beverage & Hospitality Industry" page. Based on my knowledge, I knew one more Online Food Ordering Service called "FlushingFood.com", so I did little research and add this content under "Online Service". After adding the text, I felt like I should upload FlushingFood's Logo on the top left corner of  my edit. Finally, I put the reference by copying the coding from other students and replace it with my link.

The second edit I've made is in the "Love" page, under "How to express your love and affection in many different languages". I found this interesting because I'm a non-native speaker of English, so that I want to do research and found out how to write in those languages in saying "I love you". After all, I found that it's more suitable to add 'write' in "How to express your love and affection in many different languages" title, so that the final title would be "How to express and write your love and affection in many different languages"

P2P

A file sharing is a computer to another computer transmission of digital files over the network or internet by definition. On the other hand, P2P File sharing is so-called "Peer-to-Peer" file sharing, and this is the process of sharing and distributing digital media using P2P networking technology. Users are able to access media files such as music, movies, books, and games by using a P2P software program or online platform. According to Softonic.com, the top 10 free P2P file sharing software downloaded are - just name a few: "SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor" (this application can monitor for all components), "DameWare Remote Support" (Accelerate your IT support with easy-to-use DameWare Remote Support software for remote desktop access & troubleshooting), "Vuze" (users can download high definition movies to their PC), and so on.

Acoording to the Article "Peers Find Less Pressure Borrowing From Each Other", Google is teaming up with the nation's largest P2P lender-- Lending Club, and they invested $125 million which gets borrowers and lenders together outside the conventional banking system. Google's investment shows the growing market and interest in P2P lending industry. (Kaufman,2013). Because of the P2P lending system is so efficient and user-friendly, David Schehr said "Their total volume of lending might be what a small two- or three-branch community bank does in a year." (Kaufman,2013)

Privacy

The notions of privacy and confidentiality are highly tied with the new media because the information flows so fast and freely. Anyone might get the chance to view your personal information or intimate thoughts. Google, Facebook, Twitter and some other networking cites collect our information about us everyday, which they deploy them to the advertiser to gain profits. For example, a family photo that captured by a smart phone and uploaded to the social networks, the persons in this family photo' privacy is at risk. The family photo supposed to be inaccessible to anyone, but now anyone on the internet can see this photo and someone might just predict my hair loss referencing my family photo (Reed, 2011). Another example will be the big data brokers, like Acxiom, they have developed sophisticated tools that allow them to know everything about you and sell these data to all kinds of companies that want to know our habits, sexual orientation or our finances (Nocera, 2014). To live in this digital age, none of our secret will be a secret is we like to share. We should watch out everything we do online to avoid trap that might benefit others in inappropriate way. Sometimes you think it's very safe to post anything on your social networking cites because you think you only share them with your trust-able friends, however, hackers might access to your personal photo easily and everything you posted will be a weapon to turn against you. Ownership, privacy, reputation and decision makings are so intertwined that we might not have the control of everything happened online.

Advice to Baruch College

If I'm hired by Baruch College to use new media to improve the college, the first suggestion I'll make is to improve our enrollment process. As we all have known, Baruch College has way more students than expected. Every time when the enrollment period starts,it's always painful for students to compete with each other for selecting classes. Therefore, I hope we can have an app for CunyFirst to send daily update to us for the waiting list status, how much tuition we owned and what are the new classes opened and how many classes on your shopping chart started waiting list. As for next semester, a class that I must take in order to graduate is all closed. I have to check the cunyfirst everyday to ensure I have a class to take. However, it is very inconvenience for us to use the Cunyfirst on our mobile devices. When we're not using the desktop/laptop, we have to open our browser in our phone, type in cunyfirst.com, and then login. I hope the new app will make college students' enrollment process much more easier and save their time.

Creativity and New Media

I created an avatar that looks very similar to me. I love to smile, I have yellowish skin, black eyes, brownish hair, and so on. In this imaginary world, I still can be able to be myself, even though others might now know exactly what I'm look like, but it's a new way to get to know friends from all over the world. New Media fosters creativity. If I don't create this avatar, I don't even know that how will I look in Second Life. Will I make friends based on my physical appearances or my personality?

The second creative piece of art I made with New Media is this new model of a Mini Cooper. I designed it by choosing the colors and designs I like with my affordable budge. In this way, I will be able to design my ideal car that looks different and unique.

CREATIVITY

New Media fosters creativity. In this sociotechnical system, which is the society that combines technology and people. Information technology as well as new media has empowered us in many ways. It also expands the scope of time and place. In the past, communication between people will have geographical limit, such as sending mails or traveling to visit the person will take long time. However, with new media, information can travel globally in a efficient time manner. We don't have to do face-to-face communication to keep up friendships. As of for this characteristic of new media, it fosters creativity. How so? Since people can freely engage in any forms of social media, they can come up with ideas real quick, and they can improve the process with other users' monitoring, testing, and approval. In the article, "Twitter Serves Up Ideas From Its followers", Miller suggests the fact that Twitter started offering little more than the ability to post 140-character messages two years ago. However, the idea came up from the people who use the service, and the company watches how people use it. At the last step, its engineers turn this idea into new features of Twitter. "the people making products and running companies — are naturally the ones coming up with new ideas ", Processor Von Hipper said. Customers are the one who actually uses the product, so designing a product that most customers will like is the optimum goal for all the companies. Therefore, in new media, company now is easier to communicate with its customer to know what they want in a time and cost saving way. Moreover, many customers or service users also will provide userful ideas or improvements. These sugguestions are very important to make the product or service better.
